Prof. Zhang uses big data mining methods to model, diagnosis, and predict climate change and related impacts. He has published more than 70 first-authored articles, some of which were reported by New Scientist (UK), China Science Daily, and China Social Science Daily.  

Prof. Zhang has published 6 first-authored books in known academic publishers: Mathematical and Physical Fundamentals of Climate Change (Elsevier, 2015 & 2018),  Environmental Data Analysis: Methods and Applications (Second Edition, DeGruyter, 2023)，Multivariate Time Series Analysis in Climate and Environmental Research (Springer, 2018),  Patterns and Mechanisms of Climate, Paleoclimate and Paleoenvironmental Changes from Low-Latitude Regions (Springer, 2019),  Big Data Mining for Climate Change (Elsevier, 2020)， Frame Theory in Data Science (Springer, 2023).

Prof. Zhang has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Int J Big Data Mining for Global Warming (World Scientific), Topical Chief Editor of Arab J Geosci (Springer)，Associate Editor of Environ Dev Sustain (Springer)，Associate Editor of EURASIP J Adv Signal Process (Springer), Associate Editor of Int J Climate Change Strat & Manag (Emerald), Editorial Board Member of Earth Science Informatics (Springer), Editorial Board Member of Mathematics (MDPI), Academic Editor of PLoS ONE, Editorial Board Member of Int J Global Warming,  Editorial Board Member of J Cleaner Prod, Editor of Open Geosci, Editorial Board Member of Maejo Int J Sci Tech, Editorial Board Member of Adv Meteorology, Editorial Board Member of SpringerPlus, Topical Editor of Big Earth Data (Taylor), etc.

Prof. Zhang are the PI or co-PI of key scientific research projects from Horizon2020 Framework Program (European Commission), Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition & Research Program of Ministry of Science and Technology (China), Ministry of Education (China), Shandong Provincial Government (China), Beijing Municipal Government (China) and so on. The total funding for these research projects is over 100 Million RMB (=16 Million US Dollars)

Prof. Zhang has won Springer Certificate of Appreciation on Outstanding Performance and Scientific Contribution to the AJGS, PLoS ONE Long Service Award, Young Scientist's Travel Award of the EGU, Chinese Government Award for outstanding students abroad. 

Prof. Zhang has served as 1^st Track Chair of Annual Meeting of Mediterranean Geoscience Union,  an education committee member of International Coral Reef Society, a reviewer for United Nations' IPCC report, a reviewer for United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), a reviewer for Swiss National Science Foundation, a reviewer for National Natural Science Award of China, and a review committee member for Ministry of Environmental Protection's Climate Change Program. Prof. Zhang also serves as conference track chair and advisory/scientific/organization committee member in many international known conferences.
