Research Interest

Synthetic Biology for Microbial Natural Products

Analysis of microbial genomes and metagenomes revealed an enormous amount of cryptic or silent secondary metabolite biosynthetic pathways, outnumbering the known natural products from these species by far. These “hidden” biosynthetic pathways exhibit a great potential to produce specialized metabolites as an important source of drug leads. However, most of these microbes are non-model species and hard to genetic manipulation, limiting further investigation. My research is dedicated to the development of microbial genome editing and synthetic biology enabling technologies, discovering novel natural products through genome mining, elucidating new biosynthetic mechanism, generating improved derivatives by biosynthetic engineering, and determining the ecological role of natural products in diverse environments, from single microbe to microbiome. My research interests include (1) genome mining for discovery of novel natural products and their functions, (2) biosynthetic engineering of microbial natural products, (3) genome editing of microbes and microbiome for natural product discovery.
