  • Abstract:
This study proposes to contextualise Filippo Maria Visconti’s diplomacy pertaining to the Ottoman and Byzantine empires at the time of Milan's domination over Genoa (1421-1435) as a Milanese’s political initiative to internationalise its war against Venice. The‘internationalisation of war’ has been defined as an enlargement of the conflict resulting in the inclusion of political powers and geographical theatres far distant from the original place of the war. Visconti’s policies with regard to the Levant aimed to expand the war beyond the traditional Italian borders in order to put pressure on his main rival in Italy, that is, Venice.
