Abstract:Fabricationof uniformtwo-dimensional(2D)structuresfromsmallmoleculesremainsa formidablechallengeforlivingself-assemblydespiteits greatsuccessin producinguniformone-dimensional(1D)structures.Here,wereporttheconstructionof unprecedenteduniform2D plateletswithtailorableshapesandcontrolledsizesby creatingnewnucleifroma donor−acceptor(D−A)moleculeand1-hexanolto initiate2D livingself-assembly.WedemonstratethattheD−Amoleculeundergoes1-hexanol-inducedtwistingto formcontinuousalternativehydrogenbondsin-betweenunderelectrostaticattraction,whichin turnformsa newnucleus.Thisconnectionarchitectureof thenewnucleusallowsto simultaneouslyregulatethegrowthrateof1intwodimensionsto generate2Dplateletsof distinctshapesthroughsimplyvaryingtheamountof 1-hexanolrelativeto hexane.Furthermore,the livingnatureof the newnucleusenablesseededgrowthof complexconcentricmultiblock2D heteroplateletsbysequentialandalternativeadditionof differentD−Amolecules.Interestingly,the resulting2D plateletsobtainedby suchlivingself-assemblyexhibitenhancedphotostabilitycomparedto thoseobtainedby conventionalself-assemblywithoutthe involvementof 1-hexanol.
