Abstract:Chromium (Cr) appears in nature in two forms: trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), which have different toxicities. Cr(VI) is generally more toxic and is more easily absorbed by the human body. Hence, there is a great need to efficiently detect Cr(VI). Recently, analytical techniques based on CNTs or graphene have been applied to detect Cr(VI) due to their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and good adsorption properties. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of CNT- and graphene-based techniques for Cr(VI) detection, especially for their use in electrochemical sensing. Also, we describe the preconcentration of Cr(VI) combined with advanced spectroscopic sensing techniques using CNTs and graphene for Cr(VI) detection. Finally, practical strategies for Cr(VI) detection are proposed and the remaining challenges are identified.
