Abstract:We present a method to detect edges from polynomial texture maps (PTM) directly based on its polynomial coefficients. The method considers PTM as a mapping from two-dimensional space to higher dimensional space. The direction and magnitude of the largest change at each texel is first detected from the singular value decomposition of the mapping’s Jacobian. Edges are then extracted using non-maxima suppression. Finally, edge lines are traced out with hysteresis thresholding. Both geometric and texture discontinuity can be measured with the detection method. The proposed edge detection algorithm
